If you’ve been racing through Forza Horizon 6, you’ve probably noticed the default license plates on your cars and thought, “I can make this more me.” Whether you want to slap your gamertag on your rides, craft a realistic Japanese plate, or just add a personal touch, the game gives you a couple of solid ways to do it.
To give your car a custom license plate, you can either use the quick in-game text menu or go all out with a detailed livery design for each vehicle. Here’s a breakdown of both approaches.
Method 1: The Quick Text Menu (Global License Plate)
This is the fastest way to make all your cars carry the same plate. The text you set here will automatically appear on every vehicle in your garage. Before you can access this, make sure you’ve completed the first three or four intro races to unlock your festival site or player house.
Steps:
Travel to a Safehouse: Open your map, go to the My Horizon tab, and select Return Home, or simply drive into any festival site you’ve unlocked.
Open the Garage: Head to your Garage dashboard.
Select License Plates: In the Cars tab, click on the License Plates tile.
Input Your Text: You can type up to 8 characters. If your game is set to Japanese, you can mix in hiragana along with English letters and numbers.
Save Changes: Press Accept to apply your new plate across all vehicles instantly.
This method is perfect if you want a quick, uniform look for your collection without fuss.
Method 2: Advanced Custom Livery Plates (Per-Car)
If you’re aiming for realism—like authentic Japanese plates from Shinagawa, Yokohama, or Tokyo—or want a unique plate for just one car, the community livery system is the way to go. This lets you overlay detailed decals exactly where you want them.
Steps:
Remove the Stock Plate: Go to the License Plates menu (Method 1) and clear or hide the default text.
Open the Paint Shop: Back in the Garage, click Designs & Paints and launch the Livery Editor.
Apply Decals: Select Apply Decals & Vinyls, focusing on the rear or front bumper area.
Search Community Designs: Create a new layer, hit the Search/Select button (two overlapping squares on Xbox), and enter terms like “Japan Plate,” “Euro,” or your desired region.
Download a Template: Pick a community-created plate that fits your style.
Scale and Position: Adjust the decal’s size and move it to match your car’s bumper perfectly.
With this method, you can craft plates that look like they belong on real cars, with authentic numbers, region codes, and even subtle styling differences.
