Navigating a 90-round snake fantasy draft in MLB The Show 26 is one of the most rewarding ways to play Franchise Mode. If you want to build a sustainable dynasty, you have to balance winning right now with securing future assets, all while outsmarting the CPU's draft logic.
The strategy comes down to three core principles: locking down elite position players early, exploiting the CPU's predictable patterns, and keeping your budget flexible enough to exploit the new trade systems.
Here is the exact round-by-round strategy to dominate your draft board and build a championship-caliber roster.
The Blueprint: Round-by-Round Strategy[Rounds 1–3: Elite Hitters / Cornerstones]                   │                   ▼[Rounds 4–7: High-Strikeout SPs & Speed/Power]                   │                   ▼[Rounds 8–15: Young "A" Potential Targets]                   │                   ▼[Rounds 16+: Bullpen and Bench Specialists]

1. Rounds 1–3: Secure Your Franchise Cornerstones
Your opening three picks dictate the entire identity of your franchise. The golden rule here is simple: Prioritize elite hitters over starting pitching.
In MLB The Show 26, elite position players scale significantly better over a full 162-game season, and top-tier bats become incredibly scarce after the third round. Look for young, five-tool studs who can anchor your lineup for a decade. Depending on your exact draft position, here is how you should attack the opening frames:
  • Round 1: Grab your primary number 3 or 4 powerhouse hitter. If you get an early pick, do not hesitate to pull the trigger on cover athlete Aaron Judge or a multi-talented superstar like Shohei Ohtani or Bobby Witt Jr.
  • Round 2: Pair your first-round anchor with an elite speed-and-defense option or another premier run-producer to establish the core of your lineup.
  • Round 3: Only target a true Ace pitcher here if an elite, top-tier value falls directly to you. Otherwise, keep stacking your offense.

2. Rounds 4–7: High-Strikeout Starters and Power Bats
Once your core offense is set, it is time to build your rotation and lock down scarce positions.
When searching for starting pitchers, ignore the total Overall (OVR) rating. Instead, look at the underlying attributes. You want to target guys with high Strikeout-per-9 ($K/9$) and Walk-per-9 ($BB/9$) metrics. These specific ratings translate the best whether you are manually playing your games or simulating the season.
This is also the window to secure rare, premium defensive positions. Snag your top-tier Catchers, Shortstops, and Center Fielders now. Corner positions like First Base and Left Field have much deeper talent pools, meaning you can easily find productive bats for those spots later in the draft.
3. Rounds 8–15: Exploit the CPU & Target "A" Potential
This middle stretch is where you can truly exploit the game's artificial intelligence.
The biggest market exploit in MLB The Show 26 fantasy drafts is the bullpen market. The CPU rarely drafts bullpen arms early. Aside from elite, premier closers like Emmanuel Clase, relievers will sit on the board until roughly Round 8. Do not waste early draft capital on them. Wait for the run on relievers to begin, and then quickly secure 2 or 3 shutdown arms boasting high velocity.
With your remaining picks in this window, pivot hard toward elite youth. Look for prospects with A-tier potential. Even if their current OVR sits in the low 70s, giving them consistent playing time at the Major League level will cause their ratings to skyrocket within a single season.
4. Rounds 16+: Positional Versatility and Future Assets
In the late rounds, you are drafting for depth and long-term flexibility.
Prioritize utility over pure OVR. Look for bench players who boast multiple secondary positions. Finding guys who can comfortably slide between Center Field and Shortstop, or tackle both corner infield spots, provides massive lineup flexibility when injuries inevitably strike.
The Veteran Burn: Avoid the temptation to draft aging, 30+ year-old players just because they have a decent OVR. Under the game's dynamic regression system, older players decline rapidly. Locking them into expensive, back-end contracts will quickly tank their trade value and kill your payroll.
Key Roster Construction Rules
To ensure your team performs at a high level, use your draft queue to hit these baseline team metrics:
Attribute / FocusGoal / BenchmarkStrategic Reasoning
Hitter BaseMinimum .250+ AVG & .800+ OPSPrioritizes on-base ability and slugging over empty, misleading OVR stats.
Pitching FocusLow WHIP & High K/9Minimizes base-runners and keeps your staff out of high-leverage jams.
Defense & Speed75+ Rating for CF, SS, and 2BHigh defense and range scale perfectly over long 162-game simulation seasons.
Bullpen BalanceMinimum 3 Left-Handed Pitchers (LHPs)Critical for creating favorable matchups against late-game pinch hitters.Managing the Salary Cap & The Trade HUB
Winning the draft is only half the battle; you also need to manage your finances to maximize the new features in MLB The Show 26.
  • Maintain Budget Flexibility: Never max out your budget during the initial draft. Try to leave $15M to $20M in payroll flexibility. This allows you to weaponize the newly integrated Trade Hub.
  • Target Deadline Renters: Because the game's trade logic now accounts for real-time standings and market sizes, you can use your saved budget space at the mid-season trade deadline to absorb an elite superstar contract from a losing team. This is the perfect way to push your roster over the edge for a World Series run without giving up your top prospects.
  • Navigate the "Untouchables List": Keep in mind that the updated trade logic flags premier young prospects as strictly untouchable. If you fail to draft elite, high-potential youth early on, it will be nearly impossible to trade for them later, forcing you to rely entirely on homegrown development. Draft your future stars now so you don't have to overpay for them later.
